Buddhist Le Vu Lan Festival

Quan Su Pagoda

Quan Su Pagoda is one of the top 3 pagodas in Hanoi where many Buddha worshippers go to pray on Le Vu Lan Festival. The festival falls in the 15th of the 7th month of the lunar calendar. It is an opportunity for people to pray for their parents and great, great grand-parents, both living or passed away.

Upon arrival, worshippers wear white followers for those whose parents have died and red flowers for those whose parents are still living. They pray the best for living ones and for the deceased's souls to be at peace. A prayer says when their parents are dead, they go to the west where the sun sets. Fruit-Laden tables are displayed for those who died and look for the way to the west; now, they are hungry.

Music Is the Best Medicine.

The 108 Military Central Hospital in Hanoi turns to music in treating its patients that mostly include injured soldiers and war invalids. This is one of the most prestigious hospitals in Vietnam as its capacities that stand out span the entire medical spectrum.

In an effort to ease patients' mental lives, the hospital has put a piano in the lobby and called for good-willed and volunteer musicians to play traditional or patriotic songs. Though it's hard to bury all feelings attaching to missing one's family or military unity, musicians' melodies appease patients' longing.
